Lucky Ali, the singer-actor known for his soulful voice and simple lyrics, has become the latest celebrity to fall prey to a cyber prank.
Close on the heels of celebrities like Sonam Kapoor and Ekta Kapoor, Ali’s Yahoo, Skype and Facebook accounts were hacked into, and attempts were made by an unknown person to extort money from his friends and fans.
“I was surprised when one of my contacts from London called up and informed that she had received a rather unusual demand from my mail ID. The email claimed that I was in town and needed a thousand Euros urgently.
Similar concerned calls started pouring in from other fans and contacts from India and abroad. This is when I contacted the Cyber Crime cell of the Mumbai Police and sought their help,” informed Ali.
He added that almost 20 of his contacts were approached in the past four days and sums ranging from 500-1,000 Euros were demanded from them. “It is very embarrassing to explain to my friends about the whole situation. Such incidents are a blow to the integrity and reputation of a person,” he added.
Ali said that his technical team, which monitors his online account, has been successful in tracking the hacker to Indonesia, by using his IP address and the information has been dispatched to the police.
The Cyber Cell officials said that Ali’s accounts have now been blocked for safety purposes, and a disclaimer has been posted on his homepage.
