DATA RECOVERY: How important is testing Disaster Recovery Plans?
Topics: Computer Technology | No Comments »By admin | February 26, 2010
A large number of companies today are relying too much ONLY on the existing data recovery plans they have in place. They incorrectly assume that their data recovery measures are working just fine-when in fact—no one knows for sure just how they work or how they are implemented. The issue is not about the data recovery itself. The trouble lies in the fact that no single person is tasked to take action in the event of data loss. So what does this mean? No disater recovery plan will ever be acted upon and followed through.
Why is this?
Well, for one reason testing data recovery plans is considered risky by many, since it usually involves simulating complete system failure (a scenario no one wants to get too acquainted with). Loss of data as a result of a minor glitch in data recovery could very well lead to a substantial amount of data mining work.
The truth of the matter is, for many businesses, disaster recovery is a measure that only gathers attention after some major catastrophe (like computer viruses, or terrorist attacks). Everyone is aware of September eleventh. The September 11 attack on the World Trade Center made a great impact on the data recovery industry. Subsequently, several large companies looked to data mining and data recovery as a worthy investment for their money.
But even large companies aren’t reacting fast enough. We’re not just talking about large compnaies. The average Joe doesn’t take the time to backup a computer. Years of work, digital family photos, saved music and games can be lost instantaneously. The basic truth? Hard drives are mechanical, which makes failure more of a “when” not an “if”. If your data isn’t backed up-the results can be catastrophic.
Why is this?
Most people think coming up with a plan for disater recovery, or data recovery, takes too much time. They think of it a something they need to set aside days for, in order for the task to be completed. Not so. Roxio’s Backup My PC Deluxe is designed to make protecting your data much less of a chore. The latest edition includes even more features to make backing up as simple as possible, with wizards to hold your hand in all four main parts of the software. In automatic data protection, you schedule automated backups; saving time and trouble, without the need to even know whether you require a full, incremental or differential backup.
Don’t forget about the option to create a disaster recovery plan for your machine. This lets you build a set of tools to recover your entire system should it fail to boot into the operating system. Take the time to think about data recovery-don’t wait until you are forced to recover it. Let Roxio do it for you.
